Ashray Akruti’s special school which started with just five children has now scaled up to provide education to more than 500 children with hearing loss through four schools located at SrinagarColony, S R Nagar, Chandrayangutta, Yakutpura in Hyderabad, Telangana State and oneschool located at Kadapa, Andhra Pradesh. The school provides free education and rehabilitation services to hearing impaired children from Pre Nursery to Grade 10.Residential facilities are provided to those students who are from outside of Hyderabad.

Ashray Akruti’s special school for children with hearing loss was started in 1996 and caters to the educational needs of children with hearing loss. Lack of speech and language skills is a major impediment to the development and growth of these children. Instruction to such children has to be individualized and tailor-made to suit their educational needs. At the same time these children have to be given the skills to cope with the ‘mainstream’ world and have to be trained academically to take the qualifying examinations.

The Ashray Akruti school provides free quality education and rehabilitation services for children with hearing impairment. The medium of instruction in the school is English, and the syllabus and curriculum is set according to that of the Telangana State Board. The syllabus is adapted to suit the requirements of the students. The school maintains a low teacher-student ratio, which enables every child to get individual attention.

The Ashray Akruti school follows the ‘Oral Aural method’ of teaching for children with hearing loss when identified early. However, there are suitable solutions for children identified late and with additional challenges. Ashray Akruti’s Pre-school program assists parents to develop their child’s language speech, hearing and intellectual abilities. Parents are involved in the educational program so they understand the concepts and teaching methodology and practice the same at home.

Education is provided by well-qualified special educators certified by the Rehabilitation Council of India. Content of the lessons are customized and innovative techniques and teaching aids are used for better conceptual understanding. Remedial teaching is provided to those children who perform below the required levels of the class.

At the Ashray Akruti school, students are provided free hearing aids. The school’s qualified speech and language therapists help the children use their residual hearing capabilities and develop speech and language.
