NEW BORN HEARING SCREENING
Significant hearing loss is one among the most common and
major abnormalities present at birth. It is a fact that if hearing loss is
presents it should be detected and remedied before the baby is 6 months old as
it impedes speech, language and cognitive development. The large number of
newborns in various Government and private hospitals need to be addressed as
there is neither universal screening nor a high risk screening existing in the
majority of the hospitals in Telangana.
The new born hearing screening project provides Otoacoustic
emissions, OAE screening to newborn babies from hospitals in Hyderabad. It also
provides Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry, BERA screening for all those
babies who are detected as ‘REFER’ during initial OAE screening. Newborn babies
who are diagnosed with hearing loss are referred to Ashraya-Akruti’s early
intervention Centre at S.R Nagar, Hyderabad.

children with hearing loss. Established in Hyderabad in the year 1996, the
organization implements projects across health, education and skill development
to improve the lives of the people with Disability or ‘Divyangjan’, as named by
the Government of India. Ashray Akruti

are conducted for school staff, parents, and students to bring awareness about

Ashray Akruti’s Rehabilitation Centre for Children with
Special Needs in Borabanda, Hyderabad provides intervention services to
children in the age group of 0 to 18 with various disabilities. The children
are screened and provided the most appropriate therapy/therapies by qualified
Physiotherapists, Speech Therapists, Occupational therapists and Behavioral
therapists. Each child is given individual sessions throughout the week with
Saturdays mainly reserved for group therapies. The professionals help children
achieve their optimum level of independence within home,school, and community.
The Centre encourages parental involvement in understanding
the therapies. Free hearing aids, counseling, linking persons with disabilities
to Government Schemes and entitlements are also some of the services provided
by this Centre.

Ashray Akruti envisaged the pre vocational
training unit as an extension to the extra-curricular activities of the
children. It provides a platform for the children to exhibit their talent and
creativity and develop life skills among them.

Ashray Akruti’s special school which started with just five
children has now scaled up to provide education to more than 500 children with
hearing loss through four schools located at Srinagar Colony, S R Nagar,
Chandrayangutta, Yakutpura in Hyderabad, Telangana State and one school located
at Kadapa, Andhra Pradesh. The school provides free education and
rehabilitation services to hearing impaired children from Pre Nursery to Grade
10. Residential facilities are provided to those students who are from outside of
Hyderabad.
Ashray Akruti’s special school for children with hearing
loss was started in 1996 and caters to the educational needs of children with
hearing loss. Lack of speech and language skills is a major impediment to the
development and growth of these children. Instruction to such children has to
be individualized and tailor-made to suit their educational needs. At the same
time these children have to be given the skills to cope with the ‘mainstream’
world and have to be trained academically to take the qualifying examinations.
The Ashray Akruti school provides free quality education and
rehabilitation services for children with hearing impairment. The medium of
instruction in the school is English, and the syllabus and curriculum is set
according to that of the Telangana State Board. The syllabus is adapted to suit
the requirements of the students. The school maintains a low teacher-student
ratio, which enables every child to get individual attention.
